Most of us never see what happens behind closed doors. Even the perverse nature of the invasive social media does not always uncover what we do there. If we had our personal lives broadcast to the world what would we see? But there are things that happen beyond our knowledge and it would very naive to think different. I love the song “What a beautiful world” however the reality is the world the song to refers to is not the one we are speaking about. There is a deep Christian belief that there are several planes of existence some of which we see and some we cannot.
The book of Ephesians says “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”
There is a theme in this ancient letter from Paul to the people of Ephesus that the true nature of our enemy is not who we think. He wants his church to know that human beings are not the bad guys. This is very hard to accept for most of us. One person that comes to mind is Hitler. There are numerous others. The truth is always much more than we think because it scares and unsettles us. My only question is this – Is there something else behind of this pandemic or is it just as we are being told? Is it just the media hyping it up and why are we shutting down economies which equate to human lives being ruined.
As a kid I listened to a NZ man called Barry Smith who was an articulate intelligent “preacher’ who spoke about the very things we are questioning now. I love conspiracy theories but often write them off. But I was reminded today that I should not look at only the people I can see but what I cannot see.
